Technology

"Technology is advancing so quickly that a whole new generation is being forced to learn it as they go along." That’s the opening line of an article by Wired Magazine in 2014, and they couldn’t be more right. Technology is evolving at such a fast pace that no one knows what it even means anymore. It seems like we just don’t have time for processing all the announcements about revolvers, graphene, and willow trees — much less understand them.

At the keynote address of the 11th International Conference on Education, Technology, & Society (Etc&S) in August 2014, Geoffrey West, who specializes in the study of small

Groups of people within a particular environment explained how we don’t realize when technology is changing so quickly that it impacts our lives.

West says that with the advent of technologies such as teleconferencing and social media, we experience fewer interactions with other people than in prior generations. What’s more, technology has declined our need for intimate conversations with other people, according to West.

West focused on the fact that we are social beings and we need to communicate to feel connected. However, when talking about technology and how it is impacting the ways that humans interact with each other, West said: “But sometimes I wonder if this trend [of declining face-to-face interaction] has gone too far. I mean, change is cool. But we need to have some balance. We don’t want to miss the pleasure of being together.”

As a student of education and technology, I often wonder if I am losing this balance.
