Pressed by Friends and Allies, Biden Bows Out of Presidential Race

While America’s 46th president has expressed his intention to complete his current term in office, his significant decision marks the beginning of the end for his long-standing political career spanning five decades

On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal as the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, throwing the 2024 race for the White House into disarray and marking a decisive end to a political career that spanned from one of the youngest senators in U.S. history to the oldest individual to occupy the Oval Office.

1.  At 81, Biden swiftly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the ideal candidate to overcome former President Donald Trump in the November election.

2. The announcement came just weeks ahead of the Democratic National Convention scheduled for August 19 to 22 in Chicago, where Biden was expected to officially accept the nomination. No sitting president has ever withdrawn this late in the process.

3. Prominent endorsements quickly followed for Harris, who would make history as the first woman and second Black individual to hold the presidency if elected. However, it remained uncertain whether the party's rank-and-file voters would immediately rally behind her.

4. rambling statements, and occasional incoherence—prompted party leaders and donors to urge him to withdraw from the race. Additionally, a significant portion of Democrats had expressed concerns for some time that he was too old to run for reelection.
